Migrate from BlackLine

BlackLine is a leading cloud-based account reconciliation and financial close management platform. While BlackLine provides strong workflow and certification capabilities, it has several operational limitations that FVI addresses — particularly around AI matching, real-time reconciliation, and the unified ledger of truth.

Why migrate from BlackLine

Frequent pain points reported by BlackLine users include:

  1. Limited AI matching — BlackLine's matching is primarily rule-based with some basic fuzzy matching, lacking modern AI/ML capabilities.
  2. Batch-only reconciliation — BlackLine reconciliation runs are typically scheduled (daily, weekly, monthly), not real-time.
  3. Separate transaction matching — BlackLine Transaction Matching (formerly ReconWeb) is a separate product, requiring separate licensing.
  4. Limited exception triage — BlackLine exceptions are routed through workflow rules, lacking modern AI-assisted triage.
  5. Limited integrations — BlackLine's integration capabilities require the BlackLine Connect gateway and have variable latency.
  6. High per-user licensing — BlackLine's per-user licensing model can become expensive for large operations teams.

FVI addresses each of these with a unified platform that handles account reconciliation, transaction matching, exception management, and audit trail in a single product.

Migration approach

FVI's migration approach is staged over 6-10 weeks (shorter than FIS due to BlackLine's modern API and cloud architecture):

Phase 1: Discovery (2 weeks)

  • Document current BlackLine reconciliation landscape (account list, certification workflows, custom reports)
  • Identify reconciliation volumes, exception rates, and SLA breaches
  • Map BlackLine accounts and risk classifications to FVI's data model
  • Identify all downstream consumers of BlackLine reconciliation output

Phase 2: Shadow run (2-3 weeks)

  • Deploy FVI in the customer's environment
  • Configure FVI to ingest the same transaction streams as BlackLine (via BlackLine API or source system feeds)
  • Run FVI reconciliation in shadow mode (parallel to BlackLine, no downstream impact)
  • Compare FVI output to BlackLine output, identify and resolve discrepancies

Phase 3: Parallel run (2-3 weeks)

  • Configure FVI to write reconciliation results back to BlackLine (via BlackLine API)
  • Run both BlackLine and FVI in parallel for the reconciliation cycle
  • Operations team uses FVI for review and exception handling
  • Daily reconciliation between BlackLine and FVI outputs

Phase 4: Cutover (1 week)

  • Switch the primary reconciliation engine to FVI
  • Maintain BlackLine as a fallback for 30 days
  • Update downstream consumers to read from FVI
  • Decommission BlackLine after 30 days

Phase 5: Decommission (1 week)

  • Archive BlackLine configuration and data
  • Update operational runbooks
  • Document lessons learned

Pre-built BlackLine connectors

FVI ships with pre-built connectors for:

  1. BlackLine Account Reconciliation — REST API for account read, reconciliation status, certification
  2. BlackLine Transaction Matching — REST API for transaction read, match rules, exception read
  3. BlackLine Variance Analysis — REST API for variance explanation read
  4. BlackLine Task Management — REST API for task and certification read

Data model mapping

FVI's data model maps to BlackLine's standard entities:

CounterpartyCounterpartyBlackLine counterparty record
TransactionTransactionBlackLine transaction record
Reconciliation runReconciliationBlackLine reconciliation record
ExceptionExceptionBlackLine exception record
CertificationCertificationBlackLine certification record
Audit trailAudit logFVI stores immutable audit trail

Step-by-step: configuring FVI for BlackLine reconciliation

  1. Install the BlackLine connector. In FVI, navigate to Integrations → BlackLine and install the BlackLine connector. Configure the BlackLine connection parameters (REST endpoint, OAuth client credentials) and test the connection.

  2. Map master data. Run the master data mapping wizard to map BlackLine accounts, risk classifications, and certifications to FVI's data model.

  3. Configure transaction streams. Configure the transaction stream for BlackLine reconciliation. FVI ingests via BlackLine's REST API or directly from your source systems.

  4. Create reconciliation rules. Use FVI's rule template for BlackLine reconciliation. The template includes pre-built field mappings for cash, accruals, intercompany, and balance sheet reconciliation.

  5. Run shadow reconciliation. Trigger a shadow reconciliation run and compare the output to BlackLine. Iterate on the field mapping until the output matches.

  6. Configure certification workflow. Set up the certification workflow to mirror BlackLine's. FVI supports the same multi-level certification with thresholds and reviewer assignment.

  7. Enable writeback. Enable the BlackLine writeback to update BlackLine reconciliation status fields. FVI writes the reconciliation status back via BlackLine's REST API.

Code samples

TypeScript

import { FVI } from '@falconveritas/sdk';

const fvi = new FVI({
baseUrl: 'https://api.falconveritas.com',
bearer: process.env.FVI_JWT!,
tenantId: process.env.FVI_TENANT_ID!,
});

// Trigger BlackLine shadow reconciliation
const run = await fvi.integrations.blackline.shadowReconciliation({
source: 'ACCOUNT-RECONCILIATION',
modules: ['cash', 'accruals', 'intercompany', 'balance-sheet'],
fromDate: '2026-08-01',
toDate: '2026-08-22',
});

console.log(`Shadow run ${run.id}: ${run.matched_count} matched, ${run.exception_count} exceptions`);

Python

from falconveritas import FVI

client = FVI(
bearer=os.environ["FVI_JWT"],
tenant_id=os.environ["FVI_TENANT_ID"],
)

run = client.integrations.blackline.shadow_reconciliation(
source="ACCOUNT-RECONCILIATION",
modules=["cash", "accruals", "intercompany", "balance-sheet"],
from_date="2026-08-01",
to_date="2026-08-22",
)
print(f"Shadow run {run.id}: {run.matched_count} matched, {run.exception_count} exceptions")
